GrayHair Turned Green? GrayHair Software Adopts Environmentally Friendly Telecommuting and Energy Policies

2009 February 26

Leading Mail Services Provider announces it has initiated an innovative four-and-one work week and partnered with EPA for 100% wind energy.

MT. LAUREL, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–GrayHair Software, Inc., the leading provider of innovative solutions for business mailers, is improving its energy efficiency and environmentally-sound responsibilities by adopting a new and innovative telecommuting policy which constitutes a four–day in-office work week for its employees. In addition, the company is participating in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Power Partnership.

Under the new work schedule, employees will have the opportunity to work four days in the office, and telecommute from home the fifth day. Reducing the in-office work week by one day will help reduce each employee’s gas consumption by 20 percent and reduce traffic congestion in the metro area where the company’s headquarters is located. The company will also be able to reduce its energy consumption required to operate office equipment and reduce IT and maintenance costs.

“By moving to a four-day in-office work week, we can help ease the financial burden and reduce our carbon footprint for both the company and our employees, while actually improving our ability to meet the needs of our customers,” said Cameron Bellamy, President of GrayHair Software, Inc. “Our clients not only expect a high level of experience and innovation from GrayHair in the mail arena, but also the same level of stewardship when it comes to issues of the environment.”

In addition to the shorter work week, GrayHair has partnered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to purchase more than 186,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually. This is enough green power to meet 100 percent of the organization’s purchased electricity use. The company is buying renewable energy certificates (RECs) from Sterling Planet, a leading national supplier of green power products.

Green power is electricity that is generated from environmentally-preferable renewable resources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, biogas, biomass and low-impact hydro. These resources generate electricity with a net zero increase in carbon dioxide emissions, while offering a superior environmental profile compared to traditional power generation sources. GrayHair Software’s purchase of RECs avoids approximately 294,000 pounds of carbon dioxide, a key greenhouse gas. According to the EPA, the environmental benefit is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of more than 24 passenger vehicles per year, or is the equivalent amount of electricity needed to power nearly 18 average American homes annually.

This ‘green’ movement is not new to GrayHair, as its current products already offer environmental benefits to any business mailer. These products include MailTrak AQ™, their address hygiene suite, and their UAA Offerings (including UAA SuppressionSM and UAA Re-DirectSM), both of which reduce the amount of UAA (Undeliverable as Addressed) mail which the USPS® states is up to 9 million pieces per year.
